New organic market in Gauteng

Posted on 25 April 2012

Despite the fact that ‘living green’ and ‘organic’ are all the rage at the moment, it is not always easy to find good quality organic products at a reasonable price.

Do we really need to eat meat for vitamin B-12? The answer is NO. Photo courtesy of Johnny Greig: www.JohnnyGreig.comAnd so the Fat Olive Market was born.

Our aim is to provide local artists, farmers and small businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and in doing so raising awareness about organic products and green living. We hope to create a space where clients return every second week to stock up on their fresh produce, dairy products and meat.

The market will be made up of local farmers, artists, bakers and anyone else who wants to contribute their organic/handmade items. The focus is on the items being produced locally. So all products must be made in South Africa and be as organic as possible.

The market will run twice a month with the first market being held on the 5 May 2012. The times will be 9h00 – 13h00.

The market will be held on the premises of The Fat Olive Restaurant, Plot 92, Lammermoor Conservancy, Elandsdrift Road, Muldersdrift. GPS co-ords: S25′ 57.792, E27′ 52.834.

Who are WE: Nicci is our resident eco warrior, she eats veggies, writes poetry and trusts the universe to keep her life shiny and bright. Laura recycles, plays mom’s taxi, blogs and in between that is trying to maintain some level of sanity. We are both passionate about living a green life and raising awareness about organic products and all the amazing creative people we have in South Africa.

The Sadie Family vegan wines

Posted on 14 April 2012

This winery tied for second place with Kanonkop in 2010, but had not even released its first wine, Columella 2000, at the time of the first poll in 2001. Since then, Eben Sadie has led a quality revolution in the Swartland region and has arquably done more than any single winemaker for South Africa’s international profile as a fine-wine producer. It is a combination of charisma, talent, hard-won experience and sheer hard work.

The chenin blanc-based Palladius soon joined Columella and founded a new category of distinctive Cape white blends. These 2 original Sadie wines have been joined by the Old Vineyard Series – fascinating wines made in necessarily tiny quantities. They are all made with minimal cellar manipulation, transparently expressing their origins.

Sadie Family wines are all vegan and are available from their cellar in Pederberg.

Visit Vegan SA for more South African vegan wine options.
